In this work we provide estimates of local equivalent diffusion in the lower stratosphere by comparing balloon borne high-resolution measurements of chemical tracers with reconstructed mix-5 ing ratio from large ensembles of random Lagrangian backward trajectories using Eu-ropean Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasts analysed winds and a chemistry-transport model (REPROBUS). We have investigated cases in subtropical latitudes using data from HIBISCUS campaign. Upper bound on the vertical diffusivity is found to be of the order of 0.5 m 2 s −1 in the subtropical region, which is larger than the esti-10 mates at higher latitudes. The relation between diffusion and dispersion is studied by estimating Lyapunov exponents and studying their variation according to the presence of active dynamical structures.

Vertical diffusivity in the lower stratosphere from Lagrangian back-trajectory reconstructions of ozone profiles

We present a simple stochastic-dynamical approach to estimate the turbulent vertical diffusivity (D) in the lower stratosphere from routinely observed ozone profiles. First, an observed ozone profile is reconstructed using three-dimensional back-trajectories obtained from analyzed winds and initializing the trajectories with ozone values from the output of a chemistry-transport model. Assuming ...

Seasonal variation of vertical eddy diffusivity in the troposphere, lower stratosphere and mesosphere over a tropical station

Long-term VHF radar (53 MHz with 3 beamwidth) observations at Gadanki (13.5 N, 79.2 E), India, during the period from September 1995 to August 1999 are used to study monthly, seasonal and annual medians of vertical eddy diffusivity, K in the troposphere, lower stratosphere and mesosphere. First, the spectral width contribution due to non-turbulent effects has been removed for further analysis a...

Diagnosing the Vertical Structure of the Eddy Diffusivity in Real and Idealized Atmospheres

Earth’s extra-tropical troposphere is equilibrated by turbulent eddy fluxes of potential temperature and momentum. The equilibrated state has the remarkable characteristic that isentropic slopes leaving the surface in the sub-tropics reach the tropopause near the poles. It has been speculated that turbulent eddy fluxes maintain this state for a wide range of radiative forcing and planetary para...

Turbulence parameter estimations from high-resolution balloon temperature measurements of the MUTSI-2000 campaign

Turbulence parameters in the tropo-stratosphere are analyzed using high-resolution balloon temperature measurements collected during the MUTSI (MU radar, Temperature sheets and Interferometry) campaign which took place near the Middle and Upper atmosphere (MU) radar (Japan, 35 N, 136 E) in May 2000. Vertical profiles of the specific dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy, ε, and turbulent...
